He had a rule that if they were doing maintance work in your apartment you could not leave til the work was done. He ordered the maintance man to do everything in her apartment that needed to be working right for inspection time. and to take his time. After talking on the phone to someone for just a couple of minutes, Mr. Hastings had help from the maintance man's helper, Allen, and his son and took the boxes Angeni had packed and put in the back of her truck. He had moved her truck into the garage where Mrs. White couldn't see what they were doing.
The men laid down tarp all over the flooring and was setting up paint cans in every room when the social worker came to investigate the complaint. She talked to all of them and found out the family had moved and they were getting the apartment ready for new tenants. They all stuck to the same story that the children's mother was here the whole time that Mrs. White said she wasn't or at least a woman who they thought was their mother.
It was almost dark when Angeni pulled into the apartment complex and parked in back just like she was intstructed to. Both Mr. Hastings and Allen was waiting for her. The elder Mr. Hastings told her that he was going to drive her and the other children to the reservation followed by Allen in the truck with their belongings. He then told her that was the only way that they could stay as a family. They had no time to waste. The social workers had been there three times. He told her that Mrs. White had told them that Allen plus both Mr. Hastings was hiding the children.
