Darryl releases me, removing the housekeeper's black flats. "These should fit. Try them on."
Taking the flats, I stare down at the young woman, frozen in shock. It takes a moment to get my head together. A halo of glass surrounds her corpse. Reality sinking in as I slipped on the shoes. That was somebody's sister, mother, daughter, aunt, wife. Judging from the gold band on her ring finger. Not taking any comfort in the fact that it is a perfect fit.
Taking the stairs, Darryl triggers off the small fire alarm along switch the way. An alarm sounds and the sprinklers come on. A stampeded of guest emerged from each floor, making their way to the lobby.
"Welcome to my life Adela. I can't promise you that I would let you go once we get outside and safe. They know who you are and would likely come after you."
Seventeen million people in New York and I had to chose him. Darryl checks his watch. "Now you are going to link your arm in mine and we are going to walk quickly, but not to fast. Out of here."
"I think have a splinter in my foot." Ignoring him.
He shakes his head. "We can deal with that later and if you don't do as I say, we could both get killed."
