He half smiled. "Told you they were lucky." I shook my head as he put his feet down on the floor.
"Just use the IV pole and me for support. We can go as slow as you want."
He nodded. He stood up slowly and wrapped his hand around the pole. I walked beside him ready to lend support. I carefully watched his hand which he kept close to his side. He went into the bathroom and I waited beside the door, when he was finished he leaned on me and we went back to the bed. I fluffed his pillow, pushed the bed into a sitting position and he sat down. He gritted his teeth and I saw the pain flash in his eyes. He was obviously in more pain than he let on, so I did my best to help him get comfortable. I then helped him put his arm back in the sling, careful not to make the pain worse.
Once he was settled, he reached up and caressed my cheek. "Thanks."
"Anytime." I kissed him.
I grabbed the test and then pushed the call button.
"While I'm taking this, see if you can get the nurse to bring you some food. I know you have to be hungry, I made breakfast this morning." I grinned.
He chuckled. "I liked breakfast. Best bagel I've ever had."
"I'm glad to hear that. Until you get better its bagels and Mac and Cheese."
"I can cook with one hand. I'm that good."
"Rub it in. I can't help it if I'm cookingly challenged."
He laughed. "Cookingly challenged? Did you just make that up?"
"Uh-huh." I nodded.
"Well, I'm going to need assistance in the kitchen. Nothing major of course I don't want to burn the house down." He half smiled.
I pretended to be upset. "As soon as you get better you'll pay for that."
"I look forward to it." He winked at me and I couldn't help but laugh.
I walked into the bathroom. I read the directions and did as the test required. I walked back out and placed the stick beside the sink in the room.
"The nurse is going to bring hamburgers and fries for us in about ten minutes."
I sat down beside him and rested my head on his shoulder. "Perfect the test takes five minutes."
He tucked my hair behind my ear and kissed the side of my face. We sat quietly in each other's arms, and I finally felt at peace and was content. In his arms I felt reassured that we hadn't been separated; our love had gotten us through a horrible day.
