“Let‘s talk about your valentine gift. I also want to make up for not being here while you were sick. Tell me what you want and it‘s yours.” He leaned back on the visitor chair.
“You‘re always good to me Edward; you don‘t need to make up for anything. I have you and want nothing else.”
He smiled back at her with that tender look she loved. “I mean this baby, I‘m sorry I have to travel so much but it‘s because I want to ground the business as much as possible. I promise to cut back on the trips before and after the wedding.”
“You don‘t have to neglect your business.” Gladys took his hands in hers. “I appreciate your work and the commitment you show to it. It means even more that you show the same to me as much as you can.”
“I want to be a better man for you Gladys.”
“I also want that but I don‘t want you to change on my behalf.” She moved forward to caress his cheeks with her palms and then gave him a sweet kiss.
Edward broke it off but did not pull away. “I‘ll do whatever you want…” He whispered against her lips.
“You mean what I want now?”
“And in the future too…”
“I just want you to be happy.”
“What about you? What will make you happy?”
“I want us to know and understand each other as much as we can, keep no secrets from each other and share everything. I want you to accept me for who I am and not punish me for the past experiences you had. Like I said earlier, I also want you to help me become a better woman without trying to change me. That is what I want.”
“You‘re too good for me Gladys.” Edward finally said after a long period where they couldn‘t seem to look away from each other‘s eyes.
“I think we‘re good together that‘s all.”
Edward laughed as he got to his feet. Gladys admired his long stride in the pinstriped suit as he returned to his seat behind the desk. His trim shape would always get her attention.
“I have a surprise for you.”
“Oh no, not again…” Gladys wailed playfully.
