When Trey pulled in front of his aunt's house that night, his last words to Lela were, "I'm going to make sure that punk never puts his hands on you again. You just have to promise me you won't let him disrespect you like that ever again!"
Trey had always been very protective of Lela, but she did not want him to get himself hurt dealing with Kelton's craziness.
Lela willingly agreed through fearful lips not to go back under Kelton's abusive hand, and surprisingly enough, Kelton did not come after her like he had done on the rare occasions in the past when she had gotten the guts to flee from him.
To this day, whenever Lela saw Kelton limping around town, he would damn near trip over himself running the other way.
Fear is a mutha, ain' it, Kelton? Lela thought every time she saw the punk. She didn't know what Trey had done, but whatever it was it was one hundred percent effective in keeping Kelton away from her.
When she actually thought about it, none of her prior boyfriends treated her half as good as she treated them. She always gave one hundred percent and always got less than fifty percent in return.
