"Royce." The single word spoken by Davis held a tone that silenced Royce like a slap to the mouth.
Royce and Fritz left the fire together. Davis watched her as she cleaned the camp. Finally, he cleared his throat.
"I couldn't help but hear you two last night. I'm sorry about your father."
She shrugged, not wanting to discuss the matter with him, but determined not to hurt his feelings. She was angry last night and her voice had been too loud. Now everyone in camp knew about her problems.
Davis turned his cup up side down on the rock, but he didn't leave the fire.
"I've got a little ranch in Texas. It isn't much, but ..." He paused when she turned a sharp look on him. "Oh, my intentions are honorable," he assured her. "We could get married in Ashley and take the stage back."
Her face felt hot. She doubted it was pity that inspired his proposal. Circumstances had merely presented the perfect opportunity. She poured sand over the fire and waited long enough to make it appear she had given his invitation consideration. Finally she faced him.
"I'm flattered by your offer, but I can't leave the twins."
He nodded. "Bring them along."
She smiled. "That's nice of you, but there should be more to a marriage than convenience."
He stood, his features bathed in red. "I didn't mean for it to sound that way. I... " he paused, obviously realizing she was talking about her own feelings. "You're in love with Bordeaux," he concluded in a brusque tone.
She stared at him. "I'm not in love with anyone. I don't know if I could ever love a man. Not enough for marriage, anyway. Marriage should be based on trust, and I'll never trust a man.
He looked doubtful. "I see. Well, if you change your mind, I'd be willing to take the risk." He tucked his hands in his pockets and stared at his feet. "Cassie..." He finally looked up. "I don't know what to say, except, don't let it make you bitter about life. Life's too short as it is."
Without another word, he turned and walked away.
She could do a lot worse than Davis, but marriage wasn't a solution to her problems. If and when she got married, it would be for love.
She packed all the dishes and stashed them in the back of one of the wagons. Then she headed for her wagon to harness the team. She stopped short at the wagon. The mules were harnessed and ready to go. Bordeaux. Would he never give up?
He stepped away from the team as she walked up, and she glared at him.
