"You've asking nothing of us?"
He chuckled. "I'm as curious by nature as the next person, probably even more so, but to answer your question; no."
"Hypothetically speaking; this ability we possess might cease tomorrow. Your investment would be for naught."
"An untreatable new strain of aids might crop up at any moment. Should I not fund elimination of the present strain? Life has few guarantees, sir. Trust and seizing the moment are the only chances for success. I only ask that you do as much good for as many people for as long as you can."
"How can you trust us? You don't even know who we are?"
"I trust you because of your actions. You've demonstrated your abilities and yet you've restricted your activities to accomplish a specific good, at no small risk to yourselves, I might add. I can only imagine other uses you might have embraced, for personal financial enhancement. That alone tells me all I need to know about you."
"Your offer transcends the bounds of generosity, Mr. Cooms."
"This is a pebble in the stream of my cash flow. Discuss it with the others but don't take too much time. I'm an old man."
"You may have a visitor . . . yesterday," I said as I hung up.
Alabama. I read in the paper today they recovered another child and arrested the stupid abductor. Once again, a tip was involved. How can this be?
Here in the spring time south, I have no such fear because I'm not stupid as he apparently was. Where can I find you, my next little friend? Will I see you playing in your yard or strolling to school? I'll locate your house and your bedroom and snatch you away in the dark of night. No one will see me and tip those who vow to stop my kind. No, I am not of a kind; I am unique in my perfection and my ability to forever remain undetected!
