The White Lilly - Page 13/58

Howie behaved good and got out on parole in fifteen years. He was mad at the world for his prison time. It was too long and hard on him. He had sore luck at finding a job, any job. Once when he was in a store, he stood in a line buying some food. As he neared the sales person, the cash register was open. Seeing the large paper bills got the best of him. Howie needed the money. So he reached over, grabbed the money and bumped the cashier against a wall, hurting him. Howie ran out and down the street turning one way and then ext. Someone in that store, Mike Mallory, knew him by face and told the police this later. Mike was a son of a neighbor where Howard’s dad’s house was. Howie was soon arrested, jailed, tried, and got fifteen years. He hated the sour luck. Howie had broken dreams. He was 35 when he went to jail and when he got out he would be 50. He suffered for months from depression but worked out of it. Howie was a good inmate and got out in ten years at the age of 45. Again his record made finding work impossible. One evening he was in at the Jack Rabbit Nightclub. He met a lovely woman named Deborah Tisha Swinton, who was nicknamed the White Lilly, and also a man friend of hers, Joe Grant. Howie then was living at the Salvation Army residence for the homeless.
