Kendal needed curtains and some other household goods. She noticed a second hand shop just a few doors down from the apartment house but the veteran informed her she needed someone to go with because this wasn't a safe section of town. That afternoon the veteran's son came over and volunteered to go with her. She picked out the curtains she needed along with a few other items. She got a two slice toaster, a set of four plates with glasses, flatware, cups and saucers .When she checked out the cashier told her since she was a first timer she gave her everything was half off. The owner knew she kept putting aside a set of baby sheets and a blanket. She came around and put them in a sack. Kendal told her that she didn't have the money for them. The owner just smiled and told her again everything was half off and she had already rung up those items. Kendal thanked her and left.
When she got back she put the baby items in the top drawer of the chest of drawers until needed. She place some of the baby's hygiene items stating with baby powder, baby oil, a container of little items that she would a few months from now on a pretty runner which hung down on the sides of the chest of drawers. She hand washed the curtains and laid them over the kitchen island to dry. The next day after they were dry she took a chair and hung them up. When she was though she was totally exhausted. She laid down on her quilt that she used to keep the vinyl sofa to keep from sticky due to the hot weather. it was so hot and stuffy she looked in the basement and found a circulating for her to use.
Kendal tried to stay in the clinic working so she could stay cool in the air conditioned building. Dr. Shepherd hired an OB-GYN family physician Dr. Kirkman for the clinic. She noticed Kendal had gained a little weight plus she had been seen in the restroom getting sick.. With the heat in her apartment she was getting dizzy and light headed. She got on the elevator and walked through the tunnel to the basement elevator of the clinic when she passed out. She was seen by one of the student doctors and given a medication for a stomach flu .
Kendal wouldn't take it. She said that wasn't what she needed. Dr. Kirkman saw her in the examination room . She stepped in and asked Kendal how far along was she. She gave her a big bottle of prenatal vitamins. She was told her next appointment. She would see her at the end of the day that way she wouldn't be noticed for awhile. The next appointment the doctor did a ultra sound. They baby was fine and she found out she was expecting a little boy.
