“Well, what do you know then? Who owned you before that? Where were you raised?”

Maria asked, “Don’t you know where you’re originally from?”

Alina shook her head.

Corina exasperated, “What? You’ve been blind, deaf all your life?”

“Corina, take it easy, dear,” Tati said.

“Well, it’s not like I’m asking about any secrets. These aren’t even the basics.” She huffed and turned to Alina again. “Do you even know how much you sold for? Come on, give me that much at least.”

“No. I can’t count.”

“This is just perfect!” Corina rolled her eyes.

Alina held her silence for a moment then said quietly, “I’m sorry, Masters. I really don’t know that. I only know what my Master said when he bought me.”

“What?”

“He said, my weight in gold. But I can’t count so I don’t know how much that is.”

Alina raised her gaze and stared at their faces, as if she were really expecting someone to explain it to her.

Stunned silence fell over the place.

Corina and Maria were the first to react; they exploded in laughter and shook as if they had heard a joke.
