He dropped to his knees and placed his hand at her throat. For a long, sickening moment he felt nothing. Then the hint of a heartbeat. Jack tore off his jacket and threw it over her.

“She’s alive. I got her. She’s alive but we need a medic.” He watched Beverly, still several yards away, pull her phone from her holster. Satisfied that an ambulance was on its way he turned his attention back to the injured woman.

“Ma’am? Can you hear me? Ma’am? I’m here. I’m gonna’ get you some help but you gotta’ stay with me, OK? Just hang in there.”
