Belloc was slightly taken aback. "What could we possibly have that you would dare ask for in this manner? You must know I would sooner lay down my life than give the Vhurd-aq to the likes of you."

"We have no interest in the toys of wizards," replied the Warlock. "It is the abomination we seek."

Genuinely surprised, Belloc said, "The what?"

"The water-creature!" hissed the Warlock. "Come now, I can be reasonable. I can even be somewhat charitable. Just give me its head and we'll leave you be."

Belloc thought quickly. "What could possibly make this girl of any importance to you?"

"Not to me," replied the Warlock, becoming even more sinister. "His Lordship Himself wants her dead."

Belloc, indeed, the whole company, started in surprise. Her mind blank with terror, Lily muttered, "Me? It's me they want?" Watching her eyes glaze with fear, Anest, Dorain, and Brogan moved close by to protect her from the Warlock's malice.

"I shall ask only once more," said the Warlock, advancing. "Give the water-maiden to me or die."

Angry now, Belloc regained his composure, and said ironically, "Alas for you, we have no maiden here."
