"If you mean to release us from your service," spoke Damond, "that is your affair. But we intend to continue on."
"You neither know where we intend to go nor what we intend to do," Belloc told him.
"You have made it clear that your intention is to thwart the enemy," replied Damond. "That is enough for me." Even the elves, who betrayed little emotion, added their ready assent.
"I think it safe to say that master Damond speaks for all of us," said Celedhan. "We are sworn to protect the Kingdom of Normandon, but that purpose can just as easily be served here, where the enemy's hand will strike first. Regardless, our experience with the enemy lies in dealing with marauders, not with massed forces in open battle. To deal in this manner with the enemy means learning the ways of the enemy. We elves cannot do that from Normandon."
"You little know what you ask," said the wizard, "though perhaps what you learn will be of some use to the defense of your countrymen. But we shall see."
Lily was relieved to finally be alone with Anest. They had been provided with a small suite that included ample water, bath and fireplace. After they had bathed and put on a change of clean clothes, there was a knock at the door. The kitchens had sent them a hot meal and drink, which they accepted gratefully.
