And then, as abruptly, everything returned to silent stillness once more.
A sudden, sharp cry got Palindor's and Grol's attention. Several soldiers cried out and pointed to the edge of the forest.
It was Anest and Lily.
Palindor and Grol, leading a host of amazed soldiers who looked upon and pointed at the great trees with awe and mistrust, strode towards the pair until they came to stand before them.
"What news, Anest of Brand," Palindor asked him formally, and swallowed at the sight of the apocalyptic fire he saw in the young Wizard's eyes.
Anest nodded. "Hail, Palindor. The Black Wood is now awake. You and your people need fear for its safety no longer."
Despite this news, Palindor was appalled by what he saw in the trees. "What have you done? What is it that is now awake?" In the distance, under the eaves of the Wood, the air beyond Anest and Lily seemed to ripple, as though something moved there.
"And what is that?" Grol demanded, squinting.
Palindor backed off a step, clutching the pommel of his sword. Seeing this, many soldiers drew their arms.
"You will have no need of arms in this matter!" Anest said, raising his voice for the benefit of all who stood within earshot. "Put up your weapons."
"Nor would it avail you," Lily added cryptically.
