The Spider's Fly - Page 36/49

Several months past with no change to the way that Mrs. Denmark treated Lindsey. Even though Lindsey was making extreme improvement in all areas especially math, Mrs. Denmark refused to acknowledge her accomplishments. But with the continued support of her mother and father Lindsey finally began to restore her self esteem and started setting personal goals that were challenging but that she knew she could achieve.Lindsey began to realize that there was so much more to life than school. But that she still wanted to learn despite the negative impact her teacher had on her. Finally the school year was coming close to an end. All of the students including Lindsey had to spend the next few weeks studying for the upcoming tests that would access their ability to move on to the sixth grade. Lindsey studied hard and was well prepared for all of the tests. Once the tests were completed, Lindsey couldn’t wait for the results. Finally the results came in. With a bleak look on her face, Mrs. Denmark handed Lindsey her results. Much to Mrs. Denmark’s surprise, Lindsey scored very well. Lindsey and her parents were very proud. Judging from the look on her face, Mrs. Denmark was disappointed that Lindsey did well. With her new found confidence, Lindsey didn’t allow Mrs. Denmark or any of the jealous students to affect how proud and happy she was. As a reward for Lindsey’s improvements in school and overall good behavior, Lindsey's mother decided to keep Lindsey home for the last day of school. Knowing that Mrs. Denmark nor the school had any power over Lindsey’s ability to move on to the sixth grade, Lindsey's mother decided not to contact the school to inform them of her planned absence, and decided to take her shopping instead. Lindsey and her mother headed for the shopping mall, while everyone else went to school. Lindsey’s mother let her choose a few items, and was pleased with the wise choices that she made. After spending the entire day shopping at the mall, Lindsey and her mother were exhausted. Lindsey’s mother noticed as they pulled into the driveway of their home, that Lindsey was fast asleep. After taking a long nap, Lindsey was full of energy and decided to take advantage of it. While the rest of the family enjoyed dinner together, Lindsey spent the rest of the evening sharpening her gymnastics skills in her front yard. After a couple of hours at play, Lindsey became very tired as it was a long and eventful day,so she decided to just put away her new items (school and art supplies) that her mother just bought her, and turn in for the rest of the night. The next day, Lindsey awoke to a beautiful, sunny day. She was excited that school was out and summer vacation had finally arrived. Lindsey decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and spent that day playing at the park with her brother. The two of them rode their bicycles around the park, while her older sister spent the day playing indoors with their baby sister. With June almost over, Lindsey’s 11th birthday was fast approaching. Lindsey’s wish was to go camping as they had done in the past. Each year for a couple of years in a row, Lindsey’s family would enjoy spending summer vacation camping at Comanche lake. The entire family loved swimming and camping and barbequing. As the days past, all Lindsey could think about was how wonderful it would be to spend her 11th birthday vacationing with her family once again at Comanche lake. For the next couple of weeks, Lindsey and her brother and sisters played at the park in the scorching heat while dreaming about how they wished they had a swimming pool. Lindsey and her older sister Laura immediately became bored, and decided that they would sign up to participate in the scheduled activities provided at the park, by the parks and recreation department. The park director was a really nice, young, Japanese American lady named Debbie, who spent most of her weekday time attending college studying to be a nurse and her weekend time working at the park as the parks and recreations activities director. Not many kids showed up too often, so she spent a lot of time crafting new items with Lindsey and Lindsey’s sister Laura.
