She turned and looked up.

She saw him, three feet away. A figure in a hooded sweatshirt and a black ski mask covered his face. She could only see two ragged eye holes outlined in red. Her limbs were stone and her heart was bursting.

“Who the hell are you and what do you want?” she cried.

There was no response from the stranger. He had a log in his gloved hand, it gleamed as he advanced. She put up her hand to shield herself. Oh God, this can’t be happening, she thought.

She looked around frantically as he lifted the log. She tried to scramble away but it was no use, he was too close.

CHAPTER TWELVE

The EMT guy stretched taut over his wide belly, he stood beside the ambulance taking notes. The female victim was weak from blood loss but had vaguely described what happened.

“We need to take her to the hospital as soon as possible.” The bloody scene had left everybody shaken. Flora had given him Ricky’s number.

The ambulance bay was standing open. The other EMTs were with Flora in the cabin. He watched the approaching car which was followed by police cars. He closed his eyes at the sound of sirens.

All of a sudden he heard a cry and lumbered toward the sound that came from behind him.
