“There’s no room sir,” said one of the EMT guy. “We need every space available. Please step back and let us work.”

Ricky stumbled back, his eyes wide in disbelief. The police exchanged glance as the EMTs loaded the stretcher into the ambulance. One of the officers was carrying a log in his gloved hands.

“Sir, are you one of the victim’s relatives?” asked one of the officers.

“She is my girlfriend.”

“You can hop in my car, I’ll give you a ride.”

“NO! I have to be with her.” Ricky cried.

“We’ll let you know any news from the docs.” Said the police officer.

Ricky turned to look at the police officer. “Are you crazy? I’m not leaving her alone. Get out of my way.”

The policemen looked at the stressed boyfriend, assessing his reaction. “We all know that you are stressed out, Ricky but we need to figure out what happened here. Your girlfriend was nearly murdered.”

“Oh my God.” Ricky ran his fingers through his hair. “This is my fault. I should have been here. I really want to help you but can it wait?”
