Every head in the room seemed to turn as he roared in laughter.

Rising purposefully, I laid down the fork and walked out of the room, my head held high, furious with them.

As he entered the club, Gaston glanced at the time. He had had a busy day at his real estate offices and had only stopped by to complete some work and have a quick drink before heading home. His lips twisted slightly as he thought,’home’.

When he was growing up, he had never had a ‘home’. He didn’t know who his father had been, he guessed that his mother had had no idea either, being a druggie who sold her body to pay for her fix. When she died of an overdose, he had turned to the underworld, rising in the world because he was ruthless. He still remained a player in that dark world as he made his millions.

Perhaps to make up for his grim childhood, he had bought a palatial house for himself although, in all these years, the magnificent house had been a shell, a place he took his mistress of the moment. Now the presence of a wife, HIS wife and his children had transformed it. He actually wanted to get back to see them. HIS wife, he thought, reflectively, recalling the naïve young girl who had entered his club that night and had changed his life completely.
