The boat nudged against the rocks and she jumped in. Balduur followed. The boat spun round. The engine roared and they sped away. Liala hung onto the side and felt the exhilaration of the ride. She knew she wasn't just leaving the island. She was leaving her old world behind. Her life had changed forever. She would join the common people and lead a rebellion against the guardians.

Waiting for a Lord of Light was pathetic. That's what useless people did. The good lord and his faithful servant might not exist. They had probably been invented by people who wanted an easy way out. If you wanted things to change you had to do something yourself. No amount of talk would get rid of the guardians. They had to be driven out.
