What appeared to be an immense Venus flytrap, which been lying wide open in wait concealed just beneath the surface of the sand at the base of the tree, slammed its leathery jaws tight and caught hold of Randy's right leg.
All along the rim, black pencil-thin tentacle like teeth wriggled around on his leg, obviously trying to pierce through the fabric of his jeans to get a better grasp on him.
"Oh my God, Dad," Randy shrieked, "It's crushing me!"
"Oh, forget this!" Brian exclaimed and put his arm around Randy's back. He pulled with every ounce of strength he could gather. Randy held firmly onto his father, jerking his trapped leg and wildly kicking at the viced grip with the other.
With a sickening slurping pop the thing beneath the tree released him and not stopping to check to see if Randy still had his leg attached to his body, Brian ran them through the thick fog and away from the tree, strongly clutching his damaged and howling son securely under his arm.
They hastily headed in the direction that Randy had mentioned just earlier, the direction where the van and the family would be waiting for them to arrive with help. Randy did his best to run, tripping ridiculously alongside him.
