And You Will Find Love - Page 245/287

Barbara thought she could fight off or out-run him because of his bad leg. But she became frightened by the look of lust and anger that distorted his beautiful face. She knew to whom they were directed.

"Barbara?" Chet called out to her in a cat-and-mouse voice. "I know you've come in here. I followed you from your hotel. Come out, so neither of us falls and breaks our neck. I can't see where I'm going in this damn fog and drizzle, and neither can you. Why not just come out and... we'll talk."

Sure we will, she thought, moving farther into the churchyard. She prayed she could blend with its overgrowth and shadows and become invisible.

Then, frightened enough that one man had pursued her into the churchyard, she saw the other, in the same lamplight at the gates.

Is my imagination playing tricks on me, or is that No Face, lurking in the shadows behind Chet, at the entrance gates?

The man who followed Chet into the courtyard was tall and broad-shouldered, his gray hair wild and windblown, his dark suit worn and dusty.

He looks as if he's been at work in the churchyard, digging a fresh grave. My grave? "Barbara," Chet called out to her again. "Come the hell here!"

He's lost his patience with me. He'll violate me, as he always wanted to, then kill me.

Stephen, if you were only here! "

Don't make me more mad at you than I already am."

Stephen, save me from him! I've always been able to take care of myself... I've flown bombers, nearly been shot out of the sky half a dozen times, and the Blitz of London. But I can't save myself now, without you! "

I'll be gentle with you. I promise. Even after waiting for you so long, I'll be gentle. Even after what you've done to me, I'll be gentle..."

His crazy laugh then frightened her so, Barbara turned and began to run, not knowing where in the shadows she was running.

"Dear God!" she screamed as she ran right into No Face.

He held her in his possessive arms, like she was in a vise. They were face-to-face, except that his was only half a face. Now the sight of it, with only half a nose on the left side and no right ear, sent her into hysterical trembling.

Holding Barbara so tightly she could hardly breathe, her stalker then covered her mouth with the heavy flat of one hand.

"Shhh!" No Face told her harshly. "Don't make a sound!"
