She recalled two men, two strangers, who came to Father Gregorios one night just after Nikolas had left. "I overheard them speaking with an unmistakable British accent ... something about ‛resistance,' ‛sterling,' and ‛air drops.' Oh well, the less I know the better ..."
Her love for Nikolas, her duty to deliver the papers, and the sheer fear that Phobos' men might catch up with her at any minute gave impetus to her flight.

Christomanolis, upon hearing the news from Moulos, was disappointed. After paying his last respects to Mikis, he turned around and left the cemetery.
Outfitted with fast horses, Phobos and two of his men charged forward on the road to Heraklion where they came across Christomanolis. Phobos stopped his horse and snarled:
"Where are you returning from, Christomanolis?"
"From the cemetery," he replied. "A friend of yours, eh?"
"Yes," answered Christomanolis.
"You didn't happen to see a blonde American girl, did you?"
"No."
"I will talk to you when I get back," Phobos shouted, adding "you want me to catch her dead or alive, don't you?" He laughed loudly and rode on.
When Moulos saw Phobos all dressed in black, riding a black horse and accompanied by the other two horsemen rushing down the road, he muttered to himself, "This does not look good." Instinctively, he knew that his newfound friend was in trouble. "I must do something." His brain worked unusually fast. He took out the sharp nails he was carrying in his sack to repair his mountain shack and placed them carefully on the path where the horses would tread.
"Moulos! Get your goats out of our way!" ordered the approaching Phobos.
"They won't listen to me, Mr. Phobos."
"Perhaps they will listen to me!" shouted Phobos as he took his gun out and fired shots into the air to scatter the goats. Moulos' plan worked well. Nails pierced through the hooves of two of the three horses, causing them to stop in pain.
It took Moulos a good hour to remove the nails from their hooves and re-nail their horseshoes. The delay caused Phobos to give up the chase. Anna, not aware of what had happened, kept running. Finally, her legs gave out and she collapsed to the ground. Then she saw a convoy of three trucks and jeeps flying the Greek flag. She stood up right in the middle of the road.
"What is the matter with you, woman?" yelled an officer, getting out of the first vehicle. "Do you want to get run over?"
"How dare you speak to a lady like that," she boldly replied.
"A lady? You smell more like a goat," mocked the officer.
