Flight of the Monarch - Page 65/83

Hayley picked the last flower for the bouquet, and rose to her feet, laying the fresh bud into a wicker basket.

The day was beautiful, with a calm breeze blowing against her gingham dress. She was tempted to lie down on the bright green grass, but her studies were waiting.

She thought of how nice it would be to move the lesson outdoors, but knew it would be too distracting.

Just as she had decided to leave the tranquil surroundings, Maddie approached her from behind.

"Hayley, Miss Stephens wants to know if you can come and visit today. She is lonely and appreciates your company."

"We do have good conversations."

"Really?" Maddie seemed nervous. "What do you usually talk about?"

"We discuss things such as her employment with the Sommers years ago." Hayley lifted her hand to her forehead to shield her eyes from the sun. "She was the one who told me Austin is my cousin."

"Is that all she has told you?"

"Is there more for me to know?"

Maddie reached for the flower basket. "I'll take these and put them in some water. After your morning lessons, perhaps Mr. Fields can give you a ride."

"When are you going to tell me what happened between you and Thor?"

"We don't have time to discuss it, right now between finishing your studies and visiting Mrs. Stephens."

"I'm sure Mr. Fields and Miss Stephens won't mind waiting for me."

"It's rude to keep them waiting. I thought I taught you that."

"It's a parent's job to teach social issues, but my parent doesn't seem to be around long enough."

"That is why you have me." Maddie motioned for Hayley to come alongside her. "Let's get to your studies."

As they walked together, Hayley broke the silence.

"Perhaps you and Father should marry, so I could have two parents."

Maddie stopped suddenly. "Why would you say that?"

"You believe I am teasing?"

"I don't suppose you are serious."

"Well, you are both getting up in years, and you like each other don't you?"

"Hayley, don't be ridiculous." Maddie seemed nervous. "Of course your father and I like each other."

"What more do you need but respect and compatibility?"

"We are in two different classes."

"Why should that matter?"

"Not everyone sees things as simply as you do."
