The Senator's Vote - Page 18/36

Keith rang the doorbell and a butler opened one of the double wooden doors and ushered us in.

We stepped into the foyer where the Senator was sitting in a big leather chair next to the fireplace. He was dressed in a grey suit, with a matching tie. He got up slowly and we both shook his hand. His grip was weak, and his complexion ashen; his illness had taken its toll on his body, but his eyes still glowed with a fire.

"I just wanted to offer my thanks to you both. If that plot hadn't been uncovered who knows what would've happened."

"You're welcome, Senator Edwards," I said.

"I know it won't be easy but I trust that you will handle this and capture whoever is responsible."

"We will do everything we can," Keith said.

"An agent will be coming shortly to escort you to Capitol Hill so you can still make the meeting," I added.

"Thank you, both again."

We nodded and Keith went to the SUV, uncuffed Michael and led him to the limo. Michael got into the driver's seat, Keith sat in the back on the left, Presley sat in the middle and I sat on the right hand side. Michael first dropped the keys before putting them in the ignition, then as he started driving he nearly hit a potted plant in the driveway.

Now we have two nervous people on our hands. "Just drive, Michael. It will all turn out okay," I said.

"I sure hope so, I should've have never agreed to do what they asked. What was I thinking?"

"What matters now is you're trying to make it right."

"Yeah, thanks, Agent Andrews."

"You're welcome."

The drive was silent except for Keith giving instructions to Michael. It was a short drive, and from Hawthorne we turned on Porter and then left on Adams.

Keith reached over the back of the seat and squeezed my shoulder. "We're pulling in to the dead end road now, all teams take your positions," he said into the radio.

"Copy that," Pete said. Michael parked the car and looked back at us.

"Michael get down on the floor and don't move," Keith ordered. I pulled out my gun and took a deep breath. Surveilling the area I saw to the left two rundown buildings with boarded up windows, it was quiet and there was no one around. The open field in front of us was covered in weeds that had grown waist high. It was likely hostiles could be hiding there or in the buildings.
