“We‘re to build ten blocks of flats each with six uniquely designed flats for Shell. It‘s a new development and the first of its kind so they‘re going all out to make sure everything turns out right. That‘s why they want me there personally.”
“That sounds interesting. How long will you be gone for?”
“I‘m not sure yet; a couple of weeks to a month. I want us to finish all the contract details and that‘s why I will most likely be working over the weekends too. I hear transport will involve speedboats and mobile network coverage is not the best over there.”
Gladys paused; was he trying to blow her off? “When do you have to leave?”
“That‘s why I called. I leave on Thursday and would love to see you before then.”
She exhaled and turned on her side hugging the pillow close. “Really?”
“You didn‘t think I‘d just leave? I was looking forward to our date on Saturday.”
“Me too, but that‘ll have to wait till you came back.”
“Well there‘s this music launch. I didn‘t plan to go but since we have to cancel Saturday, why not? Most of my friends will be there so if we can make it, you‘ll still meet them.”
“When is the show? I already have a date with Jennifer and Ayo for tomorrow.”
“No problem at all, the show is on Wednesday. I only need to inform Bolaji; his girlfriend is the one launching her album. And then I‘ll talk to the rest about Saturday.”
“That‘s fine then, I‘ll also let Aunt Isioma know.”
“Yes please, extend my greetings to your Aunt. Is it OK if I come into the house when I get there to pick you up?”
“Of course, my aunt‘s looking forward to seeing you again.”
Edward laughed. “I hope she‘s not saving any major questions for me?”
Gladys wasn‘t amused; he often joked about the seriousness or not of their relationship and each time she never knew how to take it. “We‘ll see, won‘t we?”
“Goodnight then sweetie. Please dream of me?”
“Goodnight Edward.” She dropped the phone and stared into space. However, she was so tired that she soon fell asleep.
