"Hmm, this is a nice choice for you. The color will bring out your eyes." He complimented attempting to lessen her annoyance. Walking around the counter cautiously he went over to the rack where the items were being sold. He continued to keep one eye on his father while assisting the customer.
"You know our extra-large is always the first to go… Hmm we do have an extra-large but only in gold." He explained as he took it off the rack. "I'm not sure if this color will look as nice on you as that powered blue." The woman gushed under his compliments and her annoyance had instantly disappeared.
"You know our clothes tend to run a little large… Have you tried that one on?" He inquired.
"Oh no… Usually the large is a little tight around here." She said as she touched herself around the bust area; indicating where tops usually were tight on her.
"Why don't you take it in the back and try it on. I mean we do have the extra large but I don't think this color will suit you. Hmm, here's a thought why not take both back there and try them on."
"Should I?" The woman asked. It was obvious that she was flattered at all of the attention that he was giving her.
"Of course you should." He urged her as he gently coaxed her towards the back where the changing room was. Once the lady had gone, he turned his attention back to his father. He found it strange that the man was still in his shop and hadn't even noticed him. He decided to approach him.
"Ahem, may I help you?" Jayden asked already tensing up with expectancy of his father recognizing him. Jacob turned to the voice and looked at the young man who had offered his assistance but Jayden couldn't see any signs of recognition. His eyes were vacant. It was as if the man was looking at a stranger. In fact the man appeared to be a little confused if not downright disoriented.
"Of yes, my wife's birthday is coming up and I wanted to get her something for it." He explained. Jayden was flabbergasted by the man's audacity. No he had to call it what it was; disappointment. It was like being rejected all over again. Was this man crazy or just plain stupid? How could the man look him square in the eyes again yet fail to acknowledge knowing him?
"Is there anything that your wife likes or need in particular?" Jayden probed despite his feelings. Business was business although he was incredulous that the man didn't or acted as if he didn't recognize him.
