"You may never understand…" He said after giving Jayden time to regain his composure.

"Then explain it to me so that I can." Jayden demanded without turning around to face his father.

"Sometimes in life… In order to protect the things and people that are dearest to you, you have to be willing to give up on something else."

"Hmm... so it was easiest for you to give me up than some trick…" Jayden accused attempting to hurt his father just a little bit. His words crashed into his father's ears like lead weight. They were sad but true.

"It's not like you think it is… You weren't born yet…"

"I know… I know I heard the story a time or two… Get rid of it… Did I quote you right?"

He glared at his father and Jacob briefly held his son's gaze. He saw 27 years of hurt, pain, loneliness, disappointments, expectations, tears, fear, and sadness. For the first time as a father to his son, his heart truly pained for him. For the first time in his life, he had regret towards his son.
