Man Up - Page 69/268

"No time for breakfast…" Jacob volunteered. Avery grew nervous watching the exchange between the estranged father and son. He was afraid that Jayden would implode if he didn't confront Mr. Ellis; but this was not the time or place.

"Woke up late…" Jayden inquired not really caring; only make small chat with a regular customer. He didn't make eye contact with Mr. Ellis Avery noted as he cautiously looked upon. That was not like him- he knew that Jayden was shutting down.

"How'd you guess?" The man chuckled as he passed him two dollars and took the items that he purchased. Mr. Ellis seemed oblivious to the teen's mood and feelings.

"Lucky I guess…" Jayden responded.

"Lucky, eh? Well alright Mr. Lucky catch you on the evening ride… Peace…" He wished as he waved off in the distance hiking up the three flights of stairs to the platform for the train leaving his unknown son staring at his back.

"Avery…" Jayden called out still watching his departing father.

"Sup dude?"

Pause.

"Yea? Why you call my name?" Avery inquired for the second time when Jayden didn't respond.

Pause.

"I-I was just wondering…"

"What?"

"Just…"

"Just what?"

Pause.

"Why come my old man can't see me?"

"What?"

"How come my dad can't see me? I'm standing here right before his eyes waiting…"

Avery couldn't answer his friend's question so instead he dismissed it and began calling: "Water! Juice! Ice cold tea- bananas and oranges…"

"Just waiting for you…"
