Whisper In The Wind - Page 30/137

A warm breeze passed over and had them both looking towards the sky. Caitlin tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and it signaled Garrett to look her way. When the warm smiled greeted her she knew it was safe to move forward.

"Playing hooky, I see. You can't get good, trustworthy help nowadays," she said.

"You caught me," he said, touching her cheek. His tender gaze left her breathless, but to make the first move seemed brash. At this point, Caitlin refused to do anything to jeopardize their friendship, even if it meant putting her heart on hold. They stayed embraced through looks while words remained lost to both of them. "In a few days we'll have this place in tip-top shape," he muttered, finally breaking the awkward silence.

"Thank you," Caitlin said, sincerity filling her voice. She had appreciated Scott's help, but seeing Garrett here took her emotions to new heights. This was the man she wanted in her life forever. Not Scott. Their looks said more than words, but she needed Garrett to speak the words. Jen had reminded her to be patient, but she was ready to jump in feet first without testing the water first. Her patience was melting quicker than sugar in hot water.

"No problem." He turned and took a step, but Caitlin grabbed his arm and winced. Muscles she never knew existed hurt today. She wasn't going to let Garrett go. They had so much to say to each other and she wasn't going to let another minute pass.

"I mean it Garrett. Though, at times, I find your brotherly love annoying, I do appreciate all you do for me." She moved and pain hit her like being kicked in the head by a horse. With a deep breath she steadied herself. "I hurt so badly today," she said with a smile, "but it feels good. How crazy is that?"

"Not crazy at all." She wondered if it was possible for souls to intertwine and share a path. When Garrett's eyes glistened like sun on a clear blue pond, like they did right now, she believed in their connection. Then he would move and create a ripple, causing a small break. Did he fear a broken heart? Or did he see her as nothing more than a good friend?

She caught up to him and they continued on their exploration of the ranch, strides matched. Garrett shared a story. "When I moved here, I refused help. I was smart, strong, and capable, but starting a ranch is tough. Luckily Marshall came along, never butting in, but making his presence known. It took many months to fully understand and there he was, ready to help. I have never regretted it." Garrett swallowed hard and turned to her. "Caitlin, don't ever fear asking me for help. Okay?"
