Whisper In The Wind - Page 83/137

"This was not supposed to happen," she said. "We had a deal. The meeting was set. Why?"

"Your guess is as good as mine."

"Scott, do you know who did it?"

"No." He rubbed his forehead. She reached out and gently placed her hand on top of his.

"I believe you."

"Why?" he said, looking at her. "There's something in your voice and the look in your eyes tells me you are being honest."

"You are one special lady." They shared a smile, but his situation prevented either from remaining happy for too long.

"What happens now?" Caitlin asked.

He shook his head as he stared at the table, his hands clenched. Caitlin's heart broke as she watched the uncertainty in his body. She wanted to take away his pain and offer him a secure future, but until this fiasco was solved, she doubted in her ability to help Scott.

"Will you do me a favor?" He nodded. "Tell whoever you called about the meeting, that I'm not coming."

He nodded, trying to hide the pride shining in his eyes.

"I do have one more question and I hope you'll answer it. Why didn't you follow through with the original intention of your visit?"

"You," he said smiling, "and the house. The way you tackled the barn and looked at your house showed me that there are people who have family who love and support them. When you mentioned a ranch, your eyes sparkled. How could I take that away from you? Anyway, I knew you would never sell." His head fell forward. "I'm sorry I couldn't stop it. I really did try, but I don't have what it takes." Caitlin took his hand and squeezed. She saw a tear at the corner of his eye and it broke her heart. She nodded, unable to speak, and then stood to leave. At the door, she turned to look one more time and smiled.

When she saw Garrett she knew he had listened to all that had been said. She took his hand and led him outside.

"You did good in there."

"We still don't know anything."

"No, but tell me something. Do you truly believe in MacKay?"

Caitlin thought for a moment. "I do. Please don't ask me to explain, because it's complicated and I'm not even sure of my reasons."

"Okay."

She glanced his way. "You're okay with that?"
