"I trust nature more than you."

"Tenderfoot," Clay said his hand over his heart. "Your words destroy me. I thought there was more between us." Then he hit his head. "I forgot. Colby wormed his way into your heart. Where should I begin in sharing stories about my older brother?"

His words flew over Megan's head. Stories about Colby's many girlfriends, none of which were around for more than a few months, filled the air. His interest in work and no play left no room for love. She refused to listen to this segment of brother against brother, especially with the contempt in his voice.

"Why did you return?" she asked. "Why do you despise your brother?"

"Because," but then he stopped. "No, you don't. You may be a college student, but you will not play psychologist with me." He turned and stared out over the lake. Now was her chance to leave. When she turned, a rustling caught his attention. He grabbed her arm. "You aren't leaving until I say we're done." She glared at him and then looked away.

Time passed in silence. She felt the weighted stare, but refused to look at him. Dusk appeared bringing dismay. Great. I didn't leave a note. When will they notice I'm missing? Where will they search? Megan wondered.

"Time to retreat," Clay said.

"I'm fine," Megan said. I have to stay outside to be rescued. When her teeth chattered and her body trembled, she unrolled the shirtsleeves and buttoned them. But the shivers never stopped. "Can we build a fire?" she asked.

"No. The earth is too dry. One spark and this place goes poof."

Megan rubbed her arms, trying to create warmth. "I'm going home."

"Not yet, we still have to talk. Let's go into the cave where it's warm." She refused the offer of his hand. "Suit yourself." He sauntered away, whistling. Little light shone off the lake and the screeching owls caused shivers.

She doubted in her ability to find her way to the ranch in the dark. "Fine," Megan said, stomping her feet and following Clay.

Even with a candle lit, its yellowish glow highlighting the petroglyphs that depicted man, eagles, and horses, Megan did not feel safe. She knew Clay would not harm her, but why the secrets and deception?

"Come, sit beside me," Clay said, patting the floor beside him. "Tell me about your college days." Megan looked towards the entrance. "He's not coming," he said. "Colby saw us kiss, and he holds a grudge for years." His tight-lipped smile irritated her.
