Before I could cross the road, to get to the parking lot, my girlfriend got out of the car and greeted me.

Gloria said in a frantic way, “I was worried about you. Some of the other hikers saw a bear around here, and when you were gone so long, I started to worry.”

She cared. I never knew she could. She always played it cool, California cool. I guess I did, too. I was glad to see her and I told her so. I gave her a hug, and pretty soon we were making love in the front seat of my car—she was lying back in the passenger seat with the back of the seat down and I was on top of her.
