"That was sweet of him. Does he often buy you gifts when he's too busy to spend time with you?"
She got a puzzled look on her face. "No, not normally, he usually just apologizes, this is unusual come to think about it, and that's a good sign. He's never bought flowers or gifts for me either, well besides Birthdays and Christmas of course. I was hoping this trip would bring us closer together again. I'm just thankful I talked him into taking me along at all. He warned me he would have very little time to be with me. I guess I was hoping he would find some time for me. It's been okay because I've now got the best friend anyone could want to share this place with, thanks again John. So what's next, was that the last one on the list?"
John was still thinking about her remark about him being the best friend. He knew that's the way it had to be, not the way he wanted it. The more time he spent with her, the more he felt for her, an interest that couldn't be returned. He snapped out of that line of thinking knowing it wasn't doing him any good. "Well, the list of nighttime must sees' is done but there is one more thing we need to do before we return to the hotel. It's time for a Gelato."
A puzzled look filled her face. "A Gelato? I don't think I know that one."
He took her hand in his before realizing what he had done and was pulling her back down the street the way they had come. Besides the magnificent Trevi Fountain, the street was lined with lots of tourist trap stores, mostly selling trinkets and post cards, vendors with carts lined the street also. He remembered spotting a Gelato shop a few doors from the end of the block when they first turned into it earlier. They entered into the shop and her face lit up. "I get it, its ice cream. Gelato is Italian for ice cream right?"
"He let go of her hand suddenly realizing what he had done and was hoping that she hadn't minded. "It's similar but contains less butter fat than normal ice cream, that makes it lighter and I think it's much better than ice cream, I promise you'll love it."
She looked at all of the bright colored tubs of Gelato in the display case in front of her. "They all look interesting, but the tags are all printed in Italian. Some have little pictures of different fruits next to them, that helps a little. Do you know what you want yet?"
