Second Harvest - Page 123/146

Sitting in the front window of the McAllister home, Roy stared into the street. Six weeks of sporadic rain had dropped from the sky with no end in sight.

"Much more of this and well need to consider building an ark, like Noah."

Hearing Maura's voice, Roy looked up and smiled. To his surprise, Maura was nursing one of the babies and she seemed unashamed. Roy averted his eyes, feeling uncomfortable. In addition, seeing her feed the twins from her breasts, was drawing too much attention from Abe.

"Who is Noah?" Roy asked as he looked out the window.

Maura smiled and then Sara walked into the room with two cups of hot coffee. After handing one cup to Roy, Sara walked back to Maura and stroked the head of the baby. Glancing over at Roy, Sara asked, "Aren't they so adorable Roy? I remember my boys when they were this small." Sara sighed. "Say, Roy, what do you think about us…?"

"Sara, don't you think we should get married first?"

Both women chuckled. Roy turned to face the window again because he was beet red with awkwardness. Sara then walked over and sat next to Roy.

"Of course, Roy, I was only teasing. Besides, I love seeing the embarrassment on your face." Sara kissed Roy's cheek.

Roy tried to shift the conversation. "Good grief, it's either feast or famine with this rain. This is more rain than I've ever seen, especially in Arizona. I suppose you prayed to your God about getting this rain too?"

"Well, as a matter of fact I did; just not this much."

Everyone had a quiet laugh over Sara's comment.

"In all seriousness, I'm anxious to get outside and ride out to the farms and see what can be done. With Maura having to feed one of the twins every hour, folks aren't getting much sleep in this house. Do you really want more children?"

"I don't know Roy. Perhaps it's foolish thinking, or a mother's instinct. I guess being around Maura and see her with those sweet girls is stirring things inside my body."

"Well, I'm sure Abe is getting an eye full with Maura nursing those babies all the time. She should not let the boys see so much."

"It's good for them to see and know, Roy. They won't be so ignorant about women when they grow up. I think you're more worried about it than they are."

"I know the boys are getting quite the education about the birds and the bees."

"You must know Roy, I always wanted a girl."

"I'm sure Maura will loan us one of hers for a while."
